Future Chef’s are Cooking

The City of Palmerston is giving young, aspiring chefs the opportunity to not only show off their skills in the kitchen but also spend a food-filled day with a leading Australian cook. Rookie Cooks Youth Cooking Competition is hitting the city in July as part of the 2019 Palmerston Youth Festival.

The competition is open to all Palmerston residents aged 10-17. Any young Palmerston cook with dreams of being head chef in a five-star restaurant is encouraged to follow their passion and showcase their abilities. Celebrity foodie Hayden Quinn is coming to the Territory from Sydney to host the Rookie Cooks competition and judge the entries along with local Palmerston faces. Hayden first graced TV screens across Australia in 2011 as a contestant on season 3 of MasterChef. He has since left his mark on the Australian world of food with an impressive resume to match. Hayden has been a judge on the series Family Food Fight, co-host of Surfing the Menu – Next Generation, author of the cookbook Dish It Up, host of Hayden Quinn South Africa, is co-owner of The Cube Gym in Sydney, part owner of Kooks Wines, and contributes to the foodie magazine Delicious. Only 20 of the best entrants will be selected to compete, so bring your A-game. The competition officially kicks off on 16 July with the 20 competing in a private cook-off. After much deliberation by the judges, the best 10 will be chosen to compete on 18 July in a public cook-off in Goyder Square.Following Masterchef’s example, the final cook-off will involve a mystery box of ingredients for the competitors to work with. The public will be encouraged to watch the young talent throw their all into the competition. The ultimate winner of Rookie Cooks will be flown to Sydney, where Hayden will show off his personal favourite food spots across the city – a perfect opportunity to get inside the mind of one of Australia’s biggest foodies.

Applications open 22 April and are accepted through palmerston.nt.gov.au and require a few questions answered about their love of food and passion to be a chef.

Applicants also need to supply video showing them cooking an original recipe.

Applications close on 10 June.
